Shorecrest steadily pulled away from the Oak Harbor High school girls basketball team to defeat the host Wildcats 59-41 Friday, Jan. 7.

The Scots, who started two 6-1 players, were much taller than Oak Harbor but it was the long-range shooting of Janie Uppinghouse and not the inside play of the Scots that troubled the Wildcats.

Uppinghouse drained five three-pointers in route to a 25-point night to lead the Scots.

Oak Harbor coach Trisha Clayville said her team out rebounded the Scots 20-16 but had trouble against the tall defenders.

Clayville said her team stopped attacking the basket: “We haven’t seen a team that tall since earlier in the season and going to the basket got kind of scary again.”

The long defenders also made it difficult for Oak Harbor to pass against the Shorecrest zone, Clayville said.

She was pleased that the Wildcats shot better (23 percent) than their previous outing (19 percent), particularly from the key. Oak Harbor missed six shots from the paint against the Scots as opposed to 40 three days earlier against Meadowdale.

Clayville said, “The girls played really hard; overall we played well. We just got beat. We continue to get better and better.”

Oak Harbor also shot better from the foul line, hitting 14 of 26 for 53.8 percent. Shorecrest shot 50 percent from the line (7-for-14) and 33 percent from the field.

The Scots committed just 13 turnovers to Oak Harbor’s 28.

Clarissa Abadesco paced Oak Harbor with 10 points. Annie Leete had eight, Ciera Wiser seven, Janelle Yoshimoto five, Emilie Renninger five, Adrianna Royal four and Jalanie Bob two (and a team-high six rebounds).

Shorecrest led at the quarters 17-9, 32-19 and 40-31.

The Wildcats (0-6, 1-11) travel twice this week, first to Glacier Peak (4-2, 7-5) Wednesday, Jan. 12, and then to Lynnwood (6-1, 11-2) Friday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m.
