Playing without two of its top two shooters, the Coupeville High School girls basketball team struggled to score in a 50-17 nonleague loss at Friday Harbor Saturday, Dec. 11.

With Kendra O’Keefe and Katie Smith sidelined with injuries, the Wolves failed to score in double figures in any quarter and were no match for the Wolverines, who upped their season record to 3-0.

Friday Harbor led 18-5 after one quarter, 28-9 at the half and 41-11 heading into the final frame.

Cassidi Rosenkrance and Lauren Escalle topped Coupeville (0-1, 1-3) in scoring with four points each. Courtney Arnold added three; and Bessie Walstad, Megan Metlow and Taya Boonstra had two each.

Coupeville coach Jackie Bykonen didn’t like the effort of her team and said that the Wolves “at times played scared.” She added, “We definitely missed Kendra and Katie.”

“Hopefully this week they can bring the intensity level up,” she said. “Positive signs included the last three minutes of the game. The girls got more aggressive and went for it. Hopefully they can begin every game that way. I just hope to see improvement every game.”

Tuesday, Dec. 14, Coupeville travels to Cedarcrest for a 7 p.m. game. The Wolves don’t return home until Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 5:15 p.m. against La Conner.
