Girls basketball: Woeful weekend for Wolves

After being steamrolled Friday night by King’s, the Coupeville girls basketball team came back with a gutty effort Saturday only to lose a close game at University Prep Saturday afternoon.

It was complete dominance by King’s (3-0, 4-2) as the host Knights won 51-8 Friday; Saturday, University Prep’s (2-5) big fourth quarter carried it to a 33-26 win over the visiting Wolves.

The Wolves’ point guard Cassidi Rosenkrance saw limited action in both games because of shin problems. Top all-around player Katie Smith missed both games with a sprained ankle; she should be back for the next contest. Kendra O’Keefe also missed the UP game for personal reasons.

Coupeville is now 0-3, 1-6. The Wolves don’t play again until Tuesday, Dec. 28, at home against La Conner (3-5) at 5:15 p.m.

Coupeville scored five points in the fourth quarter against King’s after trailing 15-1, 34-3 and 44-3 at the end of each quarter.

Wolves coach Jackie Bykonen said King’s was “so fast, so athletic.”

She added, “They were extremely scrappy and were trapping on the first pass.” That relentless defense tied up the Wolves and caused numerous turnovers, according to Bykonen.

To make matters worse, Coupeville also had a handful of “unforced errors,” according to Bykonen.

Megan Metlow scored three points for the Wolves, while O’Keefe had two, Jai’Lysa Hoskins two and Rosenkrance one.

As one-sided as the King’s game was, the University Prep game was close.

Coupeville led by one after the first quarter, 7-6, and the teams were tied 9-9 at the half and 15-15 after three.

Bykonen said her team bounced back from Friday’s bashing and “tried harder and played harder” against the Pumas. She said her team, tired from two road games in two days, was down to seven able bodies at the end of the long weekend. Bykonen was pleased with their effort.

The game turned as Rosenkrance sat the final quarter-and-a-half. With its point guard out, Coupeville had a tough time getting into its offense, Bykonen said.

Metlow responded with her best offense game of the year with 11 points. Courtney Arnold finished with six points, Hoskins three, Taya Boonstra two, Bessie Walstad two and Lauren Escalle two.
