In a season full of tough losses for the Coupeville High School girls basketball team, Monday’s loss to visiting Sultan 49-47 may have been the hardest.

The Wolves failed to hold a late lead and failed to send the seniors out with a win in their final game on the CHS court.

Coupeville (2-10, 3-15) goes to Lakewood (6-5, 7-10) Wednesday, Feb. 2, and then ends the regular season at Archbishop Thomas Murphy (10-1, 13-3) Friday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.

The Sultan game see-sawed back and forth throughout the night, although the Wolves did hold an eight-point lead over the Turks (4-7, 4-14) in the middle of the third quarter.

Sultan led 9-7 after the first quarter, then Coupeville took the lead 18-17 at the half when Cassidi Rosenkrance scored off an assist from Bessie Walstad in the final 20 seconds.

With 4:06 left in the third quarter, the Wolves pushed the lead to 29-21 with the help of two Kendra O’Keefe threes.

The Turks went on a 14-5 run go ahead 35-34, then Jai’Lysa Hoskins scored at the end of the quarter as CHS moved in front by one going into the final eight minutes.

The teams traded baskets, then Coupeville went up 47-43 with 1:20 left. The Wolves wouldn’t score again, and the Turks finished the game on a 6-0 run, four of the points coming off free throws.

Fouls hurt Coupeville all night. The Wolves committed 25 fouls, lost two players to disqualification and finished with another with four fouls. Posts Amanda Manker and Walstad spent much of the game on the bench in foul trouble.

Sultan made 17 of 28 free throws to Coupeville’s seven of 13.

O’Keefe, one of the team’s four seniors, topped the Wolves with 13 points. Katie Smith scored eight, Rosenkrance seven, Manker six, Taya Boonstra five, Hoskins four and Walstad four.

Courtney Arnold, Mehgan Metlow and Kassandra Hill are the other Coupeville seniors.
