Oak Harbor’s girls soccer team kicked off the state tournament with a 4-0 win Nov. 7 over Kentlake.

“It felt like we controlled it 100 percent,” coach Mike Lonborg said. Oak Harbor’s goalie, senior Lauren Marrs, only touched the ball a couple of times. The Wildcats hosted the first-round game.

At about four minutes into the game, junior Jayde Linson scored the Wildcats first goal off a corner kick. Two minutes later, senior Carly Vangiesen scored off a corner kick from sophomore Maddie Mays.

Oak Harbor entered the half leading 2-0.

Vangiesen scored her second goal of the night off a corner kick from Mays five minutes into the second half. Junior Addison Boyer scored with 25 minutes remaining, Lonborg said.

Vangiesen had two goals, Mays had two assists with Linson and Boyer having a goal each, Lonborg said.

Oak Harbor last competed in the state tournament in 2003.

Up next for Oak Harbor was a trip Friday to Seattle where they faced Lakeside. The game took place after the Whidbey News-Times went to press. Friday’s game took place at 11 a.m. at Interbay Stadium.

Lakeside, who placed first in the Metro League, has a record of 14-2-3 and is the fourth seed in the state tournament.
