The Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team outscored Glacier Peak by one in the second half, but the Grizzlies overwhelmed the Wildcats in the first two quarters for a 66-48 win Tuesday, Jan. 3, in Snohomish.

Glacier Peak (5-3, 7-4) mixed in a little of everything, according to Oak Harbor coach Mike Washington Sr., on the way to 20-10 and 36-17 leads after the first two quarters.

The Grizzlies took advantage of Wildcat turnovers, hit the offensive boards, scored a few transition baskets and drilled several threes to built their comfortable lead.

GP upped its lead to 26 points, 45-19, during the third quarter before an Oak Harbor surge trimmed the gap to 11 in the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies’ 6-foot-6 Zach Pederson, Wesco’s leading scorer with a 22-point average, hurt the Wildcats by hitting 10 of 14 shots and finishing with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

Meanwhile, the league’s No. 2 scorer, Oak Harbor’s Mike Washington Jr. (19.6 points per game), struggled, connecting on only four of 15 shots from the field. He did hit all six of his foul shots and recorded 14 points.

Coach Washington Sr. said both his sons, Mike Jr. and Drew, played although they were ill. Oak Harbor also played without starter Kevawn Brooks who is out with a wrist injury. He may return Friday, Washington Sr. said.

Glacier Peak out-rebounded Oak Harbor 35-23 and had nine turnovers to the Wildcats’ 16.

The Grizzlies also outshot the ‘Cats, 49 percent (26-for-53) to 39 percent (18-for-46).

JoJo Webster and Drew Washington each scored 10 points for Oak Harbor, Cameron Faulkner and Zach Gibbs had four apiece, Chris Hailer added three, Matt Burgoyne two and Elias Whitefoot one.

Coach Washington said, “I’m happy with how we played in the second half, but they were clearly the better team tonight.”

Oak Harbor (3-4, 3-8) entertains Marysville Getchell (1-6, 1-10) Friday, Jan. 6, at 7:15 p.m.
