Competitors, coaches and volunteers at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Thursday afternoon couldn’t have asked for a better day for a track meet.

In the final home meet of the 2009 season the Oak Harbor High School team squared off against WesCo North opponents Arlington and Lake Stevens, and the warm weather made for some fast times and many personal records being shattered.

Team wise, the Lake Stevens boys and the Arlington girls, with 102 and 69.50 points, respectively, were the champions. Oak Harbor placed second in both halves of the meet, with the boys tallying 68 points and the girls checking in with a score of 42.

Individually, the Wildcats had several state championship-style performances.

Shantae Young won three individual events, the 100-meter dash, and the long and triple jumps, and was a member of the winning 4×100 relay team along with Janelle Yoshimoto, Janessa Ramos and Christina Alexander.

The relay victory was a sweet one for the Oak Harbor quartet.

“I was really scared and we almost dropped it,” Young said. “We had a really bad exchange there at the end.”

“My handoff to Shantae wasn’t really that great and we were like two strides off,” Alexander said. “We came here to beat Lake Stevens because they are ranked higher than us in the state and in the league and we did it. We also PR’d today, so we’re really happy.”

The Wildcats finished the race in a time of 51.25.

The other individual event winner for the girls was Allison Duvenez in the 300 hurdles, who also teamed with Adrianna Royal, Abby Leete and Maura McKole to win the 4×400 relay in a time of 4:16.30.

“I really like running the 300 hurdles better than I do the 100,” she said. “I did oaky in the 100 today coming in second and I’m happy with the way I did. I think I PR’d, too.”

Duvenez ran a time of 46.86 in the 300 hurdles and 17.15 in the 100 hurdle event.

For the boys, Stephen Lewis won the 100 and 200-meter dashes in times of 11.23 and 22.70, and the 4×100 relay team of Greg Goebel, Jason Curles, Derrick Clarit and Josh Higbee were the winners in a time of 45.40.

“We’ve had some injuries, so we had to make some changes in the lineup,” Higbee said. “We had one day of practice before this meet, but all our exchanges were perfect.”

“All of our exchanges were pretty good and we just had it the whole time,” Clarit said.

Track fans will have one more opportunity to view the Wildcats when Oak Harbor hosts the WesCo North district meet May 13 and May 15 at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
