Great weather to be on the water

What a great week of weather we have had and it appears we are going to be able to to enjoy it for a few more days. This past weekend we decided to take the boat out and try our luck, so we headed out of Oak Harbor in thick fog and over to the green can. Once we got there we discovered a couple of other boaters that had the same idea.

This past weekend we decided to take the boat out and try our luck, so we headed out of Oak Harbor in thick fog and over to the green can. Once we got there we discovered a couple of other boaters that had the same idea.

Once the fog lifted, we saw that there where a few more boats than we initially observed.

Talking to a few anglers in passing, most reported marking lots of bait but not having any strikes.

We made our trolls in 100 to 140-feet of water and set our downriggers right next to the bottom, using spoons and hoochies in various colors without success. After awhile we varied our depth, but again came up empty.

We then headed over to Rocky Point on Camano Island and trolled the same setup in the same depth and managed to pick up five shakers all within 45 minutes. After that initial bit of success the bite was off so we headed in. All in all, it was a great day on the water.

Anglers need to watch out for crab pots. The commercial boats are out and you have to be careful when trolling with a downrigger close to a string of crab pots. I managed to get through the day without loosing a downrigger ball, but did catch something that released 20-feet under the boat. I saw no buoys, so I assumed it must have been a lost pot.
