In basketball there is nothing like having a big guy in the middle.
Post Hunter Hammer recorded a double-double in Coupeville’s 47-39 win at LaConner in boys basketball Tuesday.
Hammer, a 6-5 post, pounded the Braves for 18 points and 15 rebounds.
The game was close throughout. The Wolves led 9-7 after the first period and added only one point to that lead over the next two periods, going up 20-17 at the half and 28-25 heading into the last quarter.
Coupeville final started to pull away late, building a 10-point lead thanks largely to Hammer. He scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and picked up a steal in the last period.
The Wolves hit nine of 12 free throws down the stretch to hold the lead.
Jason Bagby was next in line behind Hammer in Coupeville scoring with nine points. JD Wilcox had six, Tim Walstad five, Ian Smith four, Chad Brookhouse three, and Tyler King two.
Coupeville coach Randy King said that long-time foe LaConner is still a big rival although the two teams no longer play in the same league.
He said, “You can expect a competitive effort at their gym.”
The Braves pressed the entire game, causing a bundle of Coupeville turnovers early. King was pleased that his players overcame the mistakes and grabbed the win.
King said, “We got better and better as the game went on.”
