Horrobin captures WGC Men’s Invitational | Golf

A strong finish carried Lucas Horrobin to his second consecutive championship in the 51st Annual Whidbey Golf Club Mountain Mist Men’s Invitational Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29.

A strong finish carried Lucas Horrobin to his second consecutive championship in the 51st Annual Whidbey Golf Club Mountain Mist Men’s Invitational Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29.

Horrobin, who played golf for San Jose State University after graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1997, shot a 141 (73, 68) to pull away over the final seven holes to win the tournament by 11 strokes over Doug Pierce.

Pierce, the 2013 Men’s Invitational champion, finished with this year’s Flight 1 low gross score of 152.

Bill Johnson captured the overall low net title with a 136.

John Matzen (143) repeated as the Flight 1 low net champion.

In Flight 2, Gene Whitley (156) took the low gross title, while Mel Elvebak (143) posted the low net score.

Tom Kidd (177) was the Flight 3 low gross winner, and Bob Greathead (147) led the field in low net.

After nasty weather Saturday and then again Sunday morning, the sun appeared as the top two foursomes teed off for the final round.

Horrobin and Pierce each shot 73s on Saturday, with Sean Hall one stroke back.

Hall hung with Horrobin through 11 holes Sunday, then Horrobin recorded a birdie on 12 and cruised to the title.

Johnson carded a net 64 on Sunday to wrap up his crown.
