Horrobin shines again, wins third staight Men’s Invitational / Golf

Regardless of the weather, Lucas Horrobin is the king of the Whidbey Golf Club Mountain Mist Men’s Invitational.

Horrobin, who played collegiately at San Jose State, withstood nasty weather and the field to win last year’s Invitational. This year he added another crown while under sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28.

In fact, it is Horrobin’s third straight Men’s Invitational title since moving back to the area.

While Horrobin, a 1997 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, took top gross honors with an even-par 144, Robert Herrick posted the best net score of 135.

Horrobin led the field by two strokes after round one with a 71 Saturday. Tim Wyer finished with a 73, and Bryce Hobbs, Robert Tercero and Tod Keith all carded 74s.

Tereco, a perennial contender, made a run at Horrobin Sunday with a 71, but Horrobin held on with a 73 to retain the championship, 144-145.

Gene Whitley and Hobbs each finished with a 148.

In Flight II, Eric Gentry (78, 79; 157) edged TJ Kubisiak (77, 81; 158) for the top score.

Merrick also shot the best gross score in Flight III, 165 (80, 85), one shot better than Dave Wichers (80, 86; 166).

Ronnie Wright was second to Merrick for the best Flight III net score, 137.

Lenny Thompson and Whitley led Flight I in net, 136.

Mel Elvebak, Bob Wilzen and Eric Gentry tied for the top Flight II net score, 139.
