Two hot-shooting teams gunned down the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team in the Prostock Winter Classic at Mount Vernon High School Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 and 28.
The Wildcats fell to Bellingham 49-30 Friday and to Cedarcrest 74-35 Saturday.
Bellingham shot 55 percent in the first half to jump to a 29-14 lead and shot 48 percent for the game. Oak Harbor put up two more shots than the Red Raiders in the game but hit nine less for only 25 percent.
Cedarcrest shot over 50 percent in both halves, finishing 26-for-48, 54 percent, in rolling by Oak Harbor. The Wildcats shot 32 percent (12-for-37) in the contest.
Oak Harbor also struggled on the boards in both games. Bellingham out-rebounded the Wildcats 37-19, and the Wolves owned a 31-14 edge.
Michaela Knutson did much of the damage in Bellingham’s torrid first half, scoring 17 of her game-high 25 points. The Red Raiders (6-3) jumped to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter, then outscored Oak Harbor 20-8 in the second period to take control.
The Wildcats trimmed the gap to 35-25 heading into the fourth quarter but could get no closer.
Annie Leete topped Oak Harbor with 11 points. Natalie Fiallos had six, Jinai Guzman five, Hayley Lundstrom four, Liz Lym two, Brook Peplinski one and Deja Bunch one.
Cedarcrest (8-1), one of the area’s top 2A teams, exploded out of the gate for a 19-6 first-quarter lead, then upped the lead to 35-15 at the break.
The Red Wolves hit five of nine three pointers, three from Megan Ditore, in the opening half to put away the Wildcats.
In the second half, Susan Kenney drained eight of 11 shots and scored 20 points and Kalee Fowler added 13 to help Cedarcrest build on its lead.
Kenney finished with 30 points, Fowler 20 and Ditore 11.
Leete once again paced Oak Harbor with 16 points, and Bunch added 11. AnnaBelle Whitefoot, Guzman, and Julie Jansen scored two each; and Lym and Fiallos had one apiece.
Oak Harbor (0-2, 0-7) jumps back into league play at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, against visiting Marysville-Pilchuck (4-4).
