“After starting the season without two senior starters, Ty Blouin and Pat Bennett, the coach for Coupeville’s boys basketball team, Randy King, must have felt like he was in a bad dream. But King’s bad dream turned into a possible nightmare Friday when starting forward Chris Good twisted his ankle during the first quarter of the team’s contest against Mount Vernon Christian. The Hurricanes handed Wolves their second loss of the season, 59-42.I just slipped coming back from the basket, said Good. Despite injuring his foot in the first period, sitting out most of the second quarter and all of the second half, Good still led Coupeville in scoring with 12 points. They didn’t seem to have any big guys, said Good about his scoring. When they came to double down they weren’t fast enough so I could pass to someone else and the outside shooting they weren’t guarding. We didn’t hang it as a team, though. During the second quarter and half time shoot around, Good was visibly in pain, holding his ankle and wincing in pain. When Good was in the game he was like a mad man on the offense and defensive side of the ball. During the final seconds of the half, Good stole the ball from a Hurricane player and took it coast to coast for a lay in. My ankle was killing me, said Good. I was just trying to run as fast as I could.The bucket would be costly as he would be taken out for good at the half.Good sat on the last wood step of the bleachers behind the Coupeville bench with his foot wrapped in tape, surrounded by ice water. In his absence a three-point half time deficit became a 17 point loss as the Wolves struggled to stop the Hurricanes on offense despite both team’s anemic shooting from the floor.I felt bad for him because he is hurting and that is the number one thing, said King. He loves to play and I like to watch him play. It just gave the other kids an opportunity to step up and take his place. We just need to get healthy though.It was a bit of a heartbreaker and a bit of a scare, said Coupeville’s Geoff Hageman. The third quarter started with Mount Vernon Christian on a 12-0 run for the first five minutes. The run, along with bad shooting, buried the Wolves. With 1:36 left in the fourth quarter, Coupeville’s Brad Sherman received a pass and went for a lay up. The shot was a perfect example of the night for the Wolves as it went in the basket and rolled right back out. I give a lot of credit to them, they had a good quick team, said King, who didn’t fault his own players heart. I thought their efforts were strong but they just didn’t get it done. We were just trying to do it the hard way and our kids couldn’t find a lot of answers.On the defensive end the Hurricanes not only got shots off, they had second, third and even fourth looks at the basket while Coupeville players were lunging for the ball, trying to make steals. We just lost something, said Good. Too many practices and not enough games I guess. We could have beat them even without him (Good), said Coupeville’s Noah Roehl. It was in warmups that did it. I remember saying in warmup we needed to pull it together and we just weren’t in it, none of us. Roehl says that the biggest problem for the Wolves in the game was ball control.We aren’t running anything and we are not staying in our offense, said Roehl. We made way too many turnovers.Coupeville struggled during the first quarter with Joe Kelley receiving three early fouls that placed him on the bench for most of the first half.I think he is still playing football, said King. I think I should have just left him in because he played pretty well in the second half.Kelley had four points for the game, all of which came in the third. The Wolves played their first league game yesterday against Darrington.
