Jet City Oaks lock up first place

“The Jet City Oaks, Oak Harbor’s power-hitting, over-30 baseball team, swept the Bellingham Cardinals in a June 11 double-header in Bellingham, locking up first place in the Quad County Baseball League at 4-0.In game one, the eventual 15-5 outcome was clear from the second inning when the Oaks drove in nine runs. Dave DeGraaf finished the inning by smacking a three-run shot over the left-field fence. Bellingham’s pitchers meanwhile, aided and abetted the Oaks efforts with three bases-loaded walks. The Oaks pitchers were not so generous.Jeff Daly (1-0) pitched the first three innings for the win, yielding one hit, one walk and no runs. Brian Barton pitched a perfect fourth inning with one strike out. And even though he allowed five runs, Bob Serfling picked up his first save of the year pitching the last three innings.Serfling also contributed with a solo homer during a two-run fourth inning and DeGraaf capped Jet City’s scoring with a three-run homer in the sixth.The long ball determined the outcome again in game two, as the Oaks blasted the Cards 14-6.This time, Jets City’s hitters took over in the first inning with seven runs, four of which were provided by rookie Dave Moody, who belted a grand slam. Moody wasn’t finished. The Oaks struck again in the fourth inning. Don Jenkins led off with with a solo homer, followed by a two-run shot by Moody.Jeff Daly and Jenkins each had a pair of RBI’s.Jet City’s Jim Shulock (3-0) pitched the entire game for the win. Although he gave up 12 hits, he walked no batters and fanned seven.The six home runs tallied by the Oaks is a one-day record for the team.With the two wins over Bellingham, the Oaks are continuing a prolific hitting trend established in the first two games of the season.On June 4, the team shelled the Whatcom Mariners 17-0. The Oaks tallied 20 hits, including six doubles and a triple on the way to their second consecutive 10-run mercy rule victory.Jet City batters gave Mariners pitchers no respite, scoring in every inning except the fourth.Whatcom answered with one run in the first inning off three singles. The Mariners also rallied in the fifth, scoring four runs to narrow the Oak’s lead to 8-6. But the Oaks put the game out of reach in the sixth, answering with four runs of their own and scoring another five runs in the seventh.Jet City scoring in the sixth was driven by RBI singles by Walt Bankowski, Bill Russell and Chris Davis. The five-run seventh inning included two RBI doubles by Serfling and Don Jenkins and an RBI by Bankowski.Strong pitching, defense and battering batting helped the Oaks blank Mount Vernon 17-0 in the season opener May 21.Jet City’s Jim Shulock pitched five stingy innings, allowing only a two-out, bloop single in the first, and an infield single in the fifth. Shulock had seven strikeouts and walked one. Don Jenkins notched the save pitching a scoreless fifth and sixth inning.Mount Vernon did not hit a ball all day .In its first four games, the team has outscored its opponents 63 to 17.The Jet City Oaks now own first place in the Quad City Baseball League. Anacortes, at 3-1, is one game out, followed by Stanwood at 2-1; Whatcom at 1-2, Bellingham at 1-3; and Mount Vernon at 0-4.The Oaks host the Stanwood Cardinals tomorrow.”
