Oak Harbor High School freshman Mary Johnston has been selected by the United States Soccer Federation to attend its U-14 training camp at the national training site in Carson, Calif, Nov. 23-30.

USA Soccer will fly Johnston in for the camp, which will include 35 other top players from around the country. “The group will form the core of the next under-17 women’s national team cycle that will be focusing on qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup,” according to a news release from U.S. Soccer.

The camp, under the direction of coach April Kater, is the last of three for the U-14 girls national team this year.

Johnston said, “I’m really excited. It has always been a goal of mine.”

Johnston was a member of the all-Washington state team, was invited to quarterly camps at the University of Washington for regional standouts and attended a preliminary U.S. Soccer camp in South Carolina last summer.

This process led to her selection for the national team camp.

For the past year, Johnston, a forward, played for Crossfire out of Redmond; previously she competed for the Northwest Nationals based in Lynnwood.

Crossfire teammates Anna Smith of Issaquah and Kelsey Turnbow of Liberty Lake will join Johnston at Carson.

Johnston began her soccer playing days as a 4-year-old in the North Whidbey youth leagues.

She was unable to compete for Oak Harbor High School this fall because of an injury but plans to play for the Wildcats in the future.
