Coupeville High School will have three athletes entered in the Class 1A state championships at Mount Tahoma High School May 25 and 26, thanks to performances turned in at the tough Tri-district Track and Field meet Friday and Saturday at Woosley Stadium in Shoreline.

As usual, junior Kyle King was a big winner for the Wolves being crowned district champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 events.

King ran the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:26.44 and was clocked at 9:39.26 in the 3,200 meters.

Brian Miller threw the javelin 162-feet, 10 inches and finished in second place to earn a trip to to the state championships.

Overall, the Coupeville boys team scored 31 points to finish in ninth place.

King’s High School was the district champion scoring 156 points, with Charles Wright second with 98.5 and Bellevue Christian third scoring 84.5 points.

For the girls, Chelsea Rosenkrance ran to a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.5 to advance to state competition.

King’s, Charles Wright and Bellevue Christian were once again the top three finishing teams with 163, 110 and 94 points, respectively.

Coupeville finished in a tie for 13th place with Northwest scoring 13 points.

The top four boys and the top five girls in each event advance to the state championship meet.

“This was a tough meet with a lot of good teams,” coach Randy King said. “As an example, our girls 1,600-meter relay team of Rosenkrance, Kim Kisch, Erin Hickey and Corrine Gaddis ran a school-record time of 4:20 in Friday’s preliminary round and then came back in the finals on Saturday with a 4:17.5 and still didn’t make it.”

The old school record of 4:21.8 was set in 2006 by the same quartet of runners.
