Scoring no more than five points in any one quarter, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team lost to first-place King’s 54-16 in Shoreline Tuesday, Jan. 8.

The tradition-rich Knights are having another strong season, winning all seven league games and 10-3 overall, but aren’t as talented as some past seasons, according to Coupeville coach Anthony Smith.

Smith said, “For some reason, we were just in awe. I don’t know why; they have the same-aged kids as we have.”

The deer-in-headlight Wolves were mistake-prone, Smith said. “You are not going to win many games with 34 turnovers.”

He added, “If we can cut our turnovers to under 20, we will give a team a run.”

The game was a step back for Coupeville. The Wolves were coming off their three best offensive outputs of the season, but against the King’s the mistakes limited their shooting opportunities. The Wolves connected on seven of 25 two-pointers (28 percent) and failed to hit any of their seven three-point attempts.

Coupeville played good defense early, limiting the Knights to only nine first-quarter points. However, Coupeville countered with only two.

King’s upped the margin to 28-7 a the half and 40-11 at the end of the third quarter.

Aaron Trumbull and Ben Etzell scored five points each for Coupeville. No other Wolf scored more than two, with Drew Chan, Carson Risner and Nick Streubel getting one hoop each.

Caleb Valko snared seven rebounds and Etzell had three steals.

Twelve different Knights scored, led by Daniel Fouty’s 12.

Coupeville (0-7, 0-12) plays the second of six consecutive road games and begins the second round of conference play when it goes to Cedarcrest (5-1, 5-7) at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11.

The Wolves play their final nonleague game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Mount Vernon Christian (4-9).
