“More than 130 women gathered to enjoy a sunny day in Oak Harbor at the Whidbey Golf and Country Club for the Ladies’ Invitational Thursday and Friday.Teams of two had an opportunity to improve Thursday’s score on Friday. They didn’t seem quite as competitive as the men — they cut loose a little more. These women took their drinks to go.Perhaps the funest part of the tournament was the horse race. About fifty women took turns teeing off before all walking and driving golf carts down the fairway, continuing to take turns until each team finished the hole. The race was held on a three-hole course. Packs of carts drove down this fairway and up that one at the same time. The women seemed in high spirits. Those who did well left the race exuberant. There were a few remarkable shots.Amy Song put the ball in from about ten feet. Triumphantly, she high-fived her partner.Ocki Dureau chipped one onto the green and left the ball fewer than three inches from the hole. Helene Valdez made a twenty-foot putt on a sloped green. Carefully, she lined up before taking her shot. The ball curved around as if it might not make it before dropping in the hole. Ecstatic, she jumped about three feet into the air before giving her partner and all of her friends high fives.”
