As Coupeville softball coach Kevin McGranahan noted, if you give a good team extra opportunities, they will take advantage. And Lakewood did.
The visiting Cougars parlayed nine Coupeville errors with 11 hits to thump the Wolves 20-7 in a five-inning non-league game Friday, May 4.
Lakewood, a 2A school, raised is record to 13-4.
“We stepped out of our weight class tonight and we learned some valuable lessons by playing a good team that is offensively sound,” McGranahan said. “We didn’t play our best defense, but, in our defense, they did hit the ball hard, but we did make some uncharacteristic errors.
“They were a good team and we may have lost even if we played error free, but if you give a good team a few cracks they will exploit it.”
The Cougars started fast with five first-inning runs and finished even stronger, plating seven runs in the fifth.
McGranahan liked how his club kept fighting throughout, even as Lakewood pulled away.
“We kept battling and scored a run (in the last inning) to show that we won’t quit,” he said.
“ A lopsided loss like this hurts, but I hope we can bounce back and realize that this loss, though it hurts, will make us a better team for districts.”
Mollie Bailey came off the bench to lead the Coupeville offense, registering a single, double, two runs and two RBI.
Scout Smith doubled, and Lauren Rose, Katrina McGranahan, Chelsea Prescott, Veronica Crownover, Hope Lodell and Coral Caveness all singled.
Coupeville (11-5) plays its final home game at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, when Sequim (6-12) visits for Senior Night.
