A last-inning rally carried visiting Sultan to a 6-1 win over the Coupeville softball team Monday, March 14.

The Lady Turks were powered by Shelby Jeffries. The Cal Poly commit smacked two long home runs and pitched a five hitter, striking out 15.

The game was tied 1-1 going into the seventh. A single, walk and double gave Sultan the lead. A two-out single and an error tacked on another run, and then Jeffries ripped a three-run shot over the centerfield fence.

Coupeville touched Jeffries for a run in the bottom of the first. Katrina McGranahan walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.

The Wolves put runners on in all but the third inning but “didn’t get the hit we needed,” according to coach Kevin McGranahan.

Jeffries tied it up with a monster shot over the left field fence in the fourth inning.

Mikayla Elfrank and Sarah Wright each collected two hits for the Wolves; Hope Lodell added a single.

Pitcher Katrina McGranahan surrendered seven hits and struck out eight.

Coupeville had its second straight strong defensive game, committing only one error and turning two double plays.

Coach McGranahan was pleased with his team’s mental toughness: “They haven’t hung their heads in two games; you can’t teach that.”

The Wolves (1-1) host Concrete (0-0) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, and then travel to Concrete at 4 p.m. Friday.
