A group of Oak Harbor and Coupeville basketball players won one of four games at the State Middle School Championships last weekend, March 18 and 19, in Spokane.
The Whidbey team was tied with defending champion Enumclaw 9-9 after one quarter in the opener but fell 60-30. Enumclaw went on to place fourth this year.
In the second game, Whidbey lost to Hazen Select 65-39, then bounced back to take game three from Naselle 44-37.
On Sunday, Whidbey lost 48-39 to Hoquiam.
Matthew Kelley of Oak Harbor Middle School led the Whidbey team in the tournament with 50 points, 25 rebounds, 15 steals, 11 blocked shots and nine assists.
Colton Livingston of OHMS was second with 35 points and 24 rebounds.
Malachi Rainey-Baker (OHMS) added 26 points and seven steals; Cameron Asinsin (OHMS) had 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists; and Parker Burkett Buffenbarger (North Whidbey Middle School) collected 11 points and 16 rebounds.
Rounding out the stats for Whidbey were Landon Cantrell (NWMS), 11 points and eight rebounds; Jared McDonald (NWMS), 4 points and eight rebounds; Joel Pacleb (OHMS), 2 points and nine assists; and Daniel Olsen (Coupeville Middle School), 2 points.
Jaden Brown was injured and did not play.
The team was coached by Nick Asinsin and Danny Brown.
In another sports note, Kelley played for fifth-ranked Northwest United U14 on the way home from Spokane in the quarterfinals of the US Soccer League State Championships Sunday in Preston.
Kelley scored the go-head goal with five minutes remaining to help NWU defeat Eastside 2-0.
