Marysville-Pilchuck whipped the host Oak Harbor High School wrestling team 54-18 Thursday, Dec. 15.
Oak Harbor collected only four wins in the match. Michael Fisken (195 pounds) and Sam Zook (285) won by falls. Fisken pinned his opponent at the 4:36 mark; Zook recorded his fall at 2:32.
Zion Gomez (126) worked for two takedowns in the final minute to win 6-5, and Blake McBride (145) eked out a 2-1 win.
Injuries, illness, academic issues and inexperience have weakened the Wildcats, according to coach Larry Falcon.
“We are in flux right now,” he said. “We have a young team that needs to spend more time in the mat room and needs to get more varsity experience. They need to learn to step up to this level of competition.”
The loss was Oak Harbor’s second straight Wesco defeat and third straight overall after beginning the season with two wins.
The Wildcat will participate in the Graham Morin Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Squalicum High School in Bellingham.
Then they will return to Squalicum for the Storm Duals at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20. Four teams representing the South — Oak Harbor, Marysville-Pilchuck, Jackson and Archbishop Murphy — will wrestle each team representing the North — Squalicum, Bellingham, Sehome and Ferndale.
