It was fun for about a half a quarter.

Oak Harbor scored first but Mount Si scored often to roll to a 40-7 win in a quad-district playoff game at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Saturday, Nov. 9.

Fifth-ranked Mount Si (9-1) advances to the state playoffs to face second-ranked O’Dea (10-0) of Seattle. Oak Harbor ended the season with a 7-3 mark.

On Oak Harbor’s second possession of the game, Dejon Devroe bolted 59 yards for a touchdown. Mark Johnston added the point-after kick and Oak Harbor led 7-0 with 7:44 left in the first quarter.

Oak Harbor had a chance to build on that when it sacked Mount Si quarterback Nick Mitchell and recovered his fumble on Mount Si’s next possession.

But it was three-and-out for Oak Harbor, and Mount Si took off from there.

Oak Harbor never forced a third down as Mount Si went 67 yards in eight plays to tie the game.

It was another three-and-out for Oak Harbor, and Mount Si took the lead midway through the second quarter on a 54-yard scoring drive. Mount Si missed the PAT and led 13-7.

The next few minutes sealed Oak Harbor’s fate. First, it fumbled on the kick return. Mount Si recovered at the 21 and scored four plays later to make it 19-7.

Then Oak Harbor drove to the Mount Si 4, only to fumble away another opportunity.

Mount Si received the second-half kickoff and put the game away with the help of more Oak Harbor misadventures. First, Mount Si overcame a third-and-16 with a 50-yard pass play. Then it faced a 4-and-9, but got bailed out on a pass interference call on a throw that wouldn’t have been completed. Next, an Oak Harbor sack resulted in a 15-yard loss, but the play was wiped out by an Oak Harbor personal foul. On the next play Mount Si scored to lead 26-7.

After Oak Harbor turned the ball over on downs at the Mount Si 37, Mount Si converted on two fourth downs on the way to scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 33-7.

Oak Harbor showed a spark of life when Devroe returned the kickoff 74 yards to the Mount Si 19. However, an interception in the end zone on the next play doused that chance.

A personal foul on the interception return pushed Mount Si back to the 1-yard line. It took the visitors only two plays to score. First, Bailey Takacs popped through the middle for 85 yards, and then Mitchell completed his third touchdown pass to finish the scoring.

Mitchell, an Oregon State University recruit, completed 15 of 24 passes for 190 yards. Takacs finished with 191 yards on 23 carries.

Mount Si held Oak Harbor to 190 rushing yards, 144 under its season average. Jordan Faralan had 99 yards on 17 carries, but 52 came on his final four tries against the Mount Si reserves. Devroe had 90 yards on 15 carries.

Oak Harbor coach Jay Turner said his team was “pretty thin” at the running back position.

Leading rusher Sheyenne Sams was out for discipline reasons and Dyllan Harris missed with a foot injury. Zach Jones, a reserve getting his first start, left the game with an injury.

Sams and Harris are also starting defensive backs.

Oak Harbor quarterback Clay Doughty threw only four passes, completing one to Nate Stanford for 34 yards.

Mount Si was flagged for five personal foul penalties, two of which resulted in trips to the hospital for Oak Harbor players with possible concussions.

Turner noted that every team that makes the playoffs will end the season on a loss except for the state champions, and he expects to reach the post season again next year.

“We have some building blocks there,” Turner said in regard to an offense that started only three seniors against Mount Si.
