Mount Vernon scored 11 unearned runs on the way to defeating the host Oak Harbor High School softball team 14-2 in five innings Tuesday, March 18.
Mount Vernon scored nine unearned runs over the first two innings with the help of four Wildcat errors to win the season opener. The Bulldogs did not register an earned run until the five-run fifth inning when they strung together five hits.
Oak Harbor scored both its runs in the first. With one out, Kelly Findley and Alexa Findley hit back-to-back singles then scored on an error off the bat of Tricia Sarns.
Kelly Findley added another single in the third inning for Oak Harbor’s only other hit.
Sarns took the loss, giving up 12 hits and three walks while striking out five.
“Tricia pitched well, but she didn’t receive much help,” said Oak Harbor coach Todd Showalter.
Oak Harbor goes to Snohomish (1-0) at 4 p.m. Friday, March 21.
