Coming off a 67-53 loss to Meridian Friday evening in Bellingham, Nooksack Valley ended the Coupeville boys basketball season Saturday afternoon defeating the Wolves 59-54 in a loser-out game of the 1A District One tournament at Mount Vernon High School.
The game was close from the opening tip between the two evenly-matched teams, with the Pioneers holding a 10-9 lead after the first quarter and Coupeville ahead by one point, 25-24, at halftime.
The Wolves appeared poised to be headed to the Tri-district tournament next week taking a 42-37 lead into the final eight minutes of the game, but it was not to be.
Nooksack Valley out-scored the Wolves 22-13 in the final period to earn the number three seed from District One.
Cody Peters had a big game in his final outing in a Coupeville uniform, scoring a game-high 23 points. Teammates J.D. Wilcox hit for 11 points and Hunter Hammer had nine.
Meridian 67, Coupeville 53
Meridian jumped out to a 22-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back en route to the 14-point victory in Friday’s game at Meridian High School.
Trailing 34-17 at halftime the Wolves out scored Meridian 16-9 in the third period, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Peters scored 19 points in the game and Hammer added 10.
Coupeville ends the season with an 11-12 record.
Pioneers top
Coupeville 50-42
Playing shorthanded, the Coupeville girls basketball team got into early foul trouble in Saturday’s loser-out District One game at Mount Vernon and dropped a 50-42 decision to Nooksack Valley to end the season with a 4-19 record.
The Wolves trailed the Pioneers 26-14 at halftime and came back to trim the margin to three points in the third quarter, but could not draw any closer.
Kendra O’Keefe led Coupeville with 11 points, Kassie Lawson scored eight and Cassidi Rosenkrance along with Megan Smith had six points each.
Lynden Christian 60, Coupeville 34
At Lynden Thursday evening, Coupeville was held to single-digit scoring for three quarters in a 60-34 loss to Lynden Christian.
The Wolves trailed 32-17 at halftime and 50-23 heading into the fourth quarter.
Smith scored a game-high 19 points for the Wolves.
