The North and Central Whidbey 11/12 Little League baseball teams both lost at the district tournament Monday, July 13, in Langley.

North Whidbey lost 2-0 in the semifinals to Sedro-Woolley, while Central Whidbey fell to host South Whidbey 9-7 in the consolation bracket and was eliminated.

North Whidbey meets South Whidbey at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out game. The winner will advance to meet Sedro-Woolley in the championship series.

Sedro-Woolley scored both its runs in the first inning in its win over North Whidbey, then North Whidbey pitchers Andrew Dixon, Gage McLeod and Jacob Hall shut the door.

The North Whidbey offense, however, never got going.

“(We) had a hard time waking up the bats,” coach Ken Harrison said. “When we hit the ball it was at a player who was able to make the out.”

North Whidbey received strong defensive play from shortstop George Dailey and second baseman Dylan Roberts, Harrison said.

For Central Whidbey, it was “too many errors and mental mistakes,” according to coach Steve Hilborn.

The sloppy play put Central Whidbey into a 9-3 hole going into the fifth inning, and even with the help of a Noah Meffert grand slam, the Coupeville crew could not quite fight all the way back.

Central Whidbey sent the winning run to the plate in the sixth inning, but Ashton Leland’s towering fly fell a few feet short of clearing the fence and winning the game, Hilborn said.

Daniel Olsen and Chelsea Prescott shared the pitching duties for Central Whidbey.
