NWAC sets 5 team records at Regional Championship

North Whidbey Aquatic Club members earned a gold medal and five team records at the Northwest Age Group Regional Championships in Federal Way March 20-24.

North Whidbey Aquatic Club members earned a gold medal and five team records at the Northwest Age Group Regional Championships in Federal Way March 20-24.

The meet included the top swimmers from Alaska, Hawaii, Inland Empire, Montana, Oregon, Pacific Northwest, Snake River and Wyoming area clubs.

Taliah Black, Patrick Caldwell, Jerrin-James Concepcion, Ashleigh Merrill and Olivia Tungate represented NWAC and achieved a 72 percent personal-best success rate.

Tungate, 13, led the local group with a gold medal, three bronze medals and two NWAC records.

Tungate won the 200 butterfly (2:07.24) and was third in the 400 individual medley (4:38.82), 200 backstroke (2:06.56; bettering Emily Huffer’s 2012 record of 2:08.60) and 100 fly (59.3; bettering Kelly Huffer’s 2012 record of 59.5).

Tungatge also placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:10.29) and ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.06).

Caldwell, swimming in his first Regional Championships, swam PRs in all five events and set three NWAC team records.

He was sixth in the 200 back (2:13.92; bettering Josh Jepsen’s 2006 record of 2:20.76). The other team records were in the 50 freestyle (25.72, breaking Kyle Ciminski’s 1999 record of 25.86) and the 100 back (1:04.16, breaking Jepsen’s 2008 record of 1:05.87).

NWAC junior swimmers Black (30th, 100 breast; 25th, 200 breast), Concepcion (24th, 200 back) and Merrill (18th, 100 free; 23rd, 200 IM; 22nd, 100 fly; 26th, 200 free) added to NWAC’s successful results.

NWAC is a taxpayer-supported program of North Whidbey Park and Recreation District, open to youth up to 18 years. NWAC goals include developing character and leadership, commitment and consistency, a focus on the long run, collegiate competitors, a support for the coaching staff and a value for taxpayers as clients.
