The North Whidbey Aquatic Club Aquajets won last weekend’s home meet, the Short-Course-Meter Triple Pentathlon, with a total of 10,933 points, besting the runner-up Bainbridge Island Swim Club (2,811) and the third-place Marysville Marlins (2,143).
Teams from Anacortes, Bremerton and Port Townsend also took part in the three day competition involving over 200 athletes.
In the meet, 11-and-older swimmers did a pentathlon each day: Friday, 50’s of the strokes and 100 individual medley; Saturday, 100’s of the strokes and 200 IM; and Sunday, 200’s of the strokes and 400 IM. Eight-and-unders and 10-and-unders did a double pentathlon: 8-and-unders did 25’s of the strokes and 100 IM one day and 50’s of the strokes and 200 IM the second day. Ten-and-unders did 50’s of the strokes and 100 IM one day and 100’s of the strokes and 200 IM the second day.
The Aquajets had five overall triple-pentathlon (for 11-and-older athletes) winners or double-pentathlon (for 10-and-under athletes) winners: Ethan Tack (9-10 boys), Marissa Morris (11-12 girls), Laura Rosen (13-14 girls), Josh Jepsen (13-14 boys) and Jacob Jepsen (15-and-older boys).
Individual pentathlon winners included the following athletes: sprint distance, Akasha Trisler, Josh Jepsen, Jerrin Concepcion, Tack and Jacob Jepsen; middle distance, Justin Erickson, Tack, Trisler, Josh Jepsen and Jacob Jepsen; and long-distance, Morris, Rosen, Josh Jepsen and Price Hu.
Athletes achieving 100 percent individual PR’s included Taliah Black, Ryan Cuajunco, Mariel Empinado, Joel Erickson, Kelly Huffer, Eric Jensen, Spenser Jensen, Angela Johnson, Michael Johnson, Danielle Kobelin, Lyndsay Loomis, Elisabeth Lundgren, Ameerah McCowin, Medina McCowin, Alexander Mueller, Jillian Pape, Autumn Robinson, Andrea Ruben, Emily Schroeder, Ethan Tack, Harrison Tack and Yasmin Tijerina.
Four Aquajets made new Pacific Northwest Swimming Championship cuts: Cuajunco (boys 13-year-old 100 back and 100 breast), Huffer (girls 9-10 50 breast), Morris (girls 11-year-old 100 breast) and Ethan Tack (boys 9-10 50 breast). Tack also qualified for the next step in the championship meet hierarchy, the Age Group Sectionals, in the 200 free.
Team records were established by Rosen (girls 13-14 200 back, 200 fly, 200 individual medley), Ciara Hu (girls 15-and-older 100 and 200 fly and 400 IM), Huffer (girls 9-10 50 fly and 50 back), Josh Jepsen (boys 13-14 200 breast), Ethan Tack (boys 9-10 50 fly, 200 free, 200 IM) and Trisler (girls 13-14 200 breast). The girls senior relay of Emily Huffer, Hu, Karina Concepcion and Trisler also set records in the 200 and 400 free and medley relays.
Loomis was named NWAC swimmer of the meet. Competing in the girls 13-14 division, she notched 11 of 11 PR’s, dropped an average of 4.5 seconds per 50 meters raced and excelled in her relays efforts.
NWAC next competes at the 33rd Annual Spring Thunderbird Invitational at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes May 14-16. It will field a team of 66 athletes.
The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college. Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke.
