Winning a key Wesco contest and getting a little revenge along the way, the Oak Harbor High School volleyball team slipped by Mountlake Terrace 3-0 on the Wildcats’ court Monday, Oct. 10.
Saturday, Oct. 8, Oak Harbor won its pool at the Anacortes Tournament but lost in the first round of the championship bracket to Mountlake Terrace.
The league win 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 over the Hawks lifted Oak Harbor’s Wesco record to 5-2 (6-4, overall) and kept Terrace (3-4, 4-5) from gaining ground on the Wildcats. The victory also allowed Oak Harbor to stay in a three-way tie for second with Lynnwood and Glacier Peak. The Wildcats go to Lynnwood Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
In the first two games against Terrace Monday, Oak Harbor jumped to 6-1 leads only to have Hawks fight back into each set.
In game one, Mountlake Terrace caught Oak Harbor at 20-20, took a 23-21 lead and then watched the Wildcats recover and close out on a 4-0 run. A Janine DeGuzman kill, a Taylor Nienhuis tip, a Christina Alexander ace and a Kayleigh Harper kill put the finishing touches on the win.
In game two, Harper rifled two kills and joined Roshel Muzzall on a block to help the Wildcats get off to the early lead.
After the Hawks evened the score at 16, a Muzzall kill and ace and two kills and two tips by DeGuzman helped Oak Harbor close out on a 9-2 run.
In game three, DeGuzman again helped finish up the match with a pair of kills.
DeGuzman ended the evening with 10 kills and 13 digs. Muzzall popped 13 kills, Alexander collected 11 digs and Nienhuis added 28 assists.
In the Anacortes Tournament, Oak Harbor defeated La Conner 2-1, Cedarcrest 2-0 and Sedro-Woolley 2-0 in pool play.
