After withstanding a comeback by Burlington Tuesday, the Oak Harbor Legion AA baseball team couldn’t hold back the host Sox in a rematch Thursday, May 31, in a 4-3 loss.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Sox received a walk and then ripped a home run to overcome a 3-2 deficit.
The Wildcats scored single runs in the first and third innings. In both, Grant Schroeder led with singles and eventually scored without the benefit of another Oak Harbor hit.
Oak Harbor starter Brent Mertins shut down the Sox with one hit over the first three innings before Burlington scored in the fourth. Another Sox run in the fifth tied it before Oak Harbor went up 3-2 in the sixth when Mike Maletto singled to start the inning and later scored on Brandon Bailey’s squeeze bunt.
Oak Harbor reliever Andrew Snavely put down the first to Sox hitters in the sixth before the Burlington rally.
The Wildcats had only one other hit, a Cory Cameron double.
Oak Harbor plays in the Lynden Wood Bat Tournament this weekend, then hosts Stanwood at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 5.
