Mount Vernon scored the game’s first 15 points, then withstood an Oak Harbor comeback to win 47-32 Wednesday, Dec. 9, on the Wildcats’ court.
When Bulldog freshman Blakely Doerge hit her fourth hoop of the night (three from behind the arc), Mount Vernon led 26-8 with 1:47 left in the first half.
Oak Harbor then scored the final seven points of the quarter to trail 26-15 at the break.
The Wildcats continued the run in the third quarter. Bryn Langrock hit a bucket, then Julie Jansen connected on three straight, including one from long range, to slice the Mount Vernon lead to two, 26-24.
The Bulldogs held on and took a 35-29 lead into the final quarter.
The game ended the way it started: Mount Vernon was hot and Oak Harbor cold.
In the opening period, Mount Vernon raced to a 17-2 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the ‘Dogs warmed up again and Oak Harbor couldn’t convert as Mount Vernon finished the game on a 12-3 run.
The Wildcats shot only 22 percent (12-54) for the game and made only one of 16 three-point tries (6 percent).
Mount Vernon was 19-for-50 (38 percent) from the field, including hittting half of its 10 three-point attempts.
“They wanted the game a little more than we did,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said in regard to the Wildcats’ sluggish start.
“We knew the girl (Doerge) could shoot, but we didn’t execute.”
During the comeback, the Wildcats played with more confidence, Atkins said, adding, “We played better defense, and that led to better offensive opportunities.”
Jansen paced Oak Harbor with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Langrock had four points and three assists, and Janae Payne had two points and three steals.
Deja Bunch scored seven points, Rashanna Graham three, Matti Miesle two and AnnaBelle Whitefoot one.
Doerge led Mount Vernon (1-2) with 11 points.
Oak Harbor (2-2) goes to Mount Baker (4-1) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11.
