The growing pains have begun for the young Oak Harbor High School wrestling team.

The Wildcats lost to Edmonds-Woodway 53-19 and to Glacier Peak 56-21 in a double-dual meet in Oak Harbor Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Stanwood also took part, losing to the Grizzlies 60-21 and to the Warriors 63-6.

After sweeping a double-dual meet last week against two of the traditionally weaker teams in the league, Oak Harbor struggled against two of the best.

“I told the kids, this is what Wesco wrestling is really about,” coach Larry Falcon said.

In Oak Harbor’s match with Edmonds-Woodway, freshman Blake Servatius (106 pounds) got thing started with a third-round fall (5:36).

The Wildcats then dropped six straight matches before Dymond Piper (152) won 16-14.

Joshua Margraf (182) won 12-3 and Sam Zook (285) won by forfeit for the other Oak Harbor points.

Piper, with a first-round pin (1:14), again broke a string of six loses to score Oak Harbor’s first points against Glacier Peak.

Nick Dugan (170) won by a fall (:56), then Margraf won his second match of the night, this time with a pin (1:21).

Zook finished the Oak Harbor scoring with a 4-0 win.

“We are young,” Falcon said, “so it is all about fundamentals. We wrestle hard, but it comes back to fundamentals.”

Falcon added that several Wildcats bumped up classes to fill weight divisions and others made their varsity debuts.

“It’s going to take time.”

Oak Harbor (2-2) goes to Stanwood for a double-dual match with Meadowdale (0-4) and Mountlake Terrace (2-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15.
