Saving the best for last, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team defeated visiting Marysville-Pilchuck 5-2 Monday, Oct. 10, collecting its first conference win in the final regular season match.
The Wildcats dominated the singles matches, giving up only five points while winning each in straight sets: 1, Jackson Wezeman won 6-0, 6-0; 2, JJ Mitchell won 6-1, 6-0; 3, Sidney Thomas won 6-1, 6-1; and 4, Nathanael Thompson won 6-1, 6-1.
Trenton Cone and Enrique Perez-Herronz captured third doubles for Oak Harbor 6-1, 6-3.
Matthew Kolden and John Bird dropped first doubles 6-4, 6-0; and Corbin Phipps and Jacob Schermerhorn fell in second doubles 6-2, 6-0.
Ryan Mene and Quinton Sams teamed up to win an exhibition match 8-4.
The team victory helped Oak Harbor avenge a 4-3 loss to Marysville-Pilchuck (1-10, 1-14) earlier this season.
Oak Harbor (1-10, 3-13) will take part in the Wesco North Divisional Tournament at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 18 and 19, at Snohomish. The top four singles players and the top four doubles teams will advance to the district tournament.
