Taking some of the sting out of not qualifying for the district tournament, the Oak Harbor Legion AA baseball team closed out the season by winning three of four games at the Stanwood Tournament last weekend.

The one loss came in eight innings as Oak Harbor fell 7-6 to Snohomish after opening the tournament with a 5-3 win over rival Burlington Saturday, July 21.

Sunday, Oak Harbor ended the season on an offensive high note, thumping Pullman 13-0 in five innings and Stanwood 21-4 behind Andrew Snavely’s grand slam.

Against Burlington, Oak Harbor scored two in the first inning. Grant Schroeder was hit by a pitch, Mike Maletto and Jack Richter walked to fill the bases, then Snavely drove in two with a single.

Burlington tied the game with single runs in the second and fourth, then Oak Harbor tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

With two outs, Clay Doughty and Schroeder singled and eventually scored on passed balls. Maletto walked and scored on Richter’s double.

Snavely finished with two hits and two RBI. Maletto walked three times and scored two runs.

Richter earned the win, giving up only two earned runs.

Oak Harbor came back against Snohomish but couldn’t hold its one lead.

Snohomish scored three in the second and one in the third to go up 4-0. Oak Harbor cut the lead in half with two in the fourth. Brent Mertins and Cory Cameron walked and moved up on Brandon Bailey’s bunt. After Mertins scored on a passed ball, Jozef Mendoza walked and Schroeder singled in Mertins.

Snohomish scored again in the fourth, then Oak Harbor tied it at 5 with a three-run fifth.

A double by Richter was followed by a single by Snavely, a bunt single by Mertins and a double by Cameron for the three-spot.

Oak Harbor took its first lead in the eighth. Per tournament rules, the two teams used the international tie-breaker. The player who made the final out the previous inning, David Kusnick, started the current inning on second base. Doughty bunted Kusnick to third, then Schroeder drove him home with a single.

Schroeder relieved starting pitcher Mertins in the fourth and held Snohomish scoreless until the eighth. Snohomish started with a runner at second, then a walk and hit batter loaded the bases. Schroeder almost got out of the jam with two outs, but a single drove in the winning runs.

Snohomish had only five hits in the game but was aided by nine Wildcat walks.

Schroeder led the offense with two hits, Richter and Cameron had doubles, and Snavely and Mertins added singles.

The Wildcats pounded out 14 hits in the win over Pullman and got things rolling with an eight-run second.

Maletto spurred the rally with two hits in the inning (double and single), Richter added a double, and Kusnick and Anthony Stewart had singles.

Oak Harbor scored four in the third with the help of hits by Schroeder, Stewart, Richter, Mertins and Cameron.

The final run came in the fifth when Richter doubled and Mertins singled.

Mertins had three hits and four RBI, Maletto had two hits and four RBI, and Stewart had two bunt singles and two runs.

Wolfe pitched the four-hit, five-inning shutout.

Oak Harbor scored in all but one inning — including 10 runs in the seventh — in the 16-hit romp over Stanwood.

The Wildcats also got a solid pitching performance from Doughty who took a one-hit shutout into the fifth inning.

The onslaught began with three runs in the first off singles by Schroeder, Stewart, Mertins and Cameron.

Maletto singled in the second inning and later scored on Mendoza’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Oak Harbor scored three more in the third with the help of hits by Richter, Snavely and Mertins.

After a scoreless fourth, Oak Harbor scored twice in the fifth and sixth.

The two in the fifth came without a hit, thanks to three walks and two hit batters.

In the sixth, three more hit batters (there were seven in the game) loaded the bases and Daniel Wolfe drove in two with a single.

The first nine batters all reached base and scored for Oak Harbor in the seventh. Snavely highlighted the big inning with a double and grand slam. Cameron had two hits, Mertins doubled, and Stewart and Tabor Rupp added singles.

Snavely finished with a three-hit game that included six RBI and four runs.

Mertins and Cameron also had three hits; Mertins scored four runs and Cameron had a pair of RBI. Maletto was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Oak Harbor finished the summer with a 15-16 record. Coach Tyson VanDam said he was pleased with the play of his team this season and growth of the younger players.
