The Oak Harbor Legion baseball team scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to pick up a 3-2 extra-inning league win over visiting Meridian Wednesday, June 10.
It was a nice bounce-back win for the Wildcats, who fell 10-2 to visiting Anacortes the previous evening.
Next up for Oak Harbor (3-3) is a rematch with Anacortes at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 11, in Anacortes.
Robert Herring played the key offensive roll in the win over Meridian.
Herring led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double. Dylan Bailey put down a two-strike bunt to move Herring to third.
Meridian elected to intentionally walk the next two batters to set up a force at home. Preston Rankin then hit a hot grounder the shortstop bobbled, allowing Herring to score the game winner.
Herring figured in both other Oak Harbor runs. He led off the first with a single, stole second and scored on Tyler Snavely’s double.
In the fifth with the Wildcats down 2-1, Avery Aguirre started the inning with a double. After two strikeouts, Herring saved the inning by lashing a triple to tie the game.
Snavely pitched a complete game for the win, scattering nine hits. Meridian strung together four hits in the third inning to score its two runs.
Rankin doubled and Steven Richards singled for the only other Wildcat hits.
Anacortes scored in five of the seven innings to get by Oak Harbor Tuesday.
The Wildcats scored single runs in the third and sixth innings.
In the third, Trent Benson walked, stole second and scored on Herring’s single.
Consecutive singles by Rankin, Aguirre and Bailey plated the run in the sixth.
Bailey finished 2-for-3; Benson also collected a hit.
