The Arlington High School girls basketball team sees itself as a state title contender. No argument here.

The talented Eagles defeated host Oak Harbor 75-32 Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Arlington’s nine seniors, after qualifying for state the past three years while posting a 66-15 record (35-5 in league), are primed for a championship run.

The win over the Wildcats lifted Arlington’s 2015-16 record to 12-0 (2-0 in the Wesco North).

The Eagles are currently ranked third in the Associated Press 3A state poll and fifth in the Seattle Times’ poll.

Arlington used a full-court, trapping match-up zone the first half to take leads of 21-7 and 40-13 at the quarters. Arlington pressed off misses and turnovers as well as made baskets.

The Eagles were able to keep up their frantic pace by coming at Oak Harbor in waves, subbing entire units halfway through each of the first three quarters.

The pressure defense created 18 points off turnovers before the break.

Oak Harbor suited only eight players for the game.

All 13 Eagles scored; 10 made more than one basket.

The Arlington starters sat out the final period.

The Eagles also stung Oak Harbor with the long ball. Six different players combined to make 10 three-pointers.

Arlington jumped to a 12-1 lead, then Oak Harbor made it 15-7 on six points by Julie Jansen. The Eagles followed with a 15-1 run, thanks to a fury of Oak Harbor turnovers, to pull away.

“I thought we played well in spurts,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said. “However, we gave up way too many fast break points.”

Atkins liked that his players “didn’t give up” and were “getting after it” to the final buzzer.

After opening conference play against the league’s best two teams, Stanwood and Arlington, Atkins said his team is better prepared for the next portion of the schedule when it faces team its has a better “shot at.”

Jansen led Oak Harbor in scoring with 13 points. All of the other seven Wildcats also scored: Lexi Jones, four; Janae Payne, four; Deja Bunch three; Bryn Langrock, three; Matti Miesle, two; AnnaBelle Whitefoot, two; and Rashanna Graham, one.

Gracie Castaneda scored 12 points to lead Arlington.
