Unable to overtake defending champion Moses Lake, the Oak Harbor High School bowling team finished fourth at the Washington State Bowling Proprietor’s Association High School Varsity Championships Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19, at Lilac Lanes in Spokane.
The Wildcats, who came in as the No. 2 seed this year, hoped to regain the crown it held from 2011-2014. That four-year reign was the first time any team won four consecutive titles in any state, according to Oak Harbor coach Jason Youngsman. In all, the Wildcats have won six state titles.
Oak Harbor placed second behind Moses Lakes in 2016.
The Wildcats did not come home with the first-place trophy, but they did place a bowler, Earl Angeles, on the five-person, all-state first team. Angeles knocked down 1,980 pins in 10 games for a 198 average, third-best in the tournament.
Wildcat DJ Rutter earned second-team honors with a sixth-best 195 average, one pin from qualifying for first-team.
John Hilden of Mount Spokane led the tournament with a 204 average.
Moses Lake won the state title with 49 points, followed by Shorewood (40), Shadle Park (38.5) and Oak Harbor (33) in the eight-team Division I standings. Division I featured the best teams in the state.
After day one, Oak Harbor, with 19 points, sat in a three-way tie in second place behind Moses Lake, which led with 25.
In all, there were 24 five-person teams spread over three divisions and 46 individual bowlers in the tournament. This was the 52nd annual WSBPA Varsity Championships, the second longest running high school state tournament to New York in the country.
Along with Angeles and Rutter, Oak Harbor was represented by Niko Hawkins, Daniel Johnson and Devin McCardle.
