The lightweights were anything but in Oak Harbor High Schools’ 38-33 comeback wrestling win at Marysville Getchell Thursday, Jan. 28, in the regular season finale.
With the win, the Wildcats (3-2, 7-4) finished third in the Wesco North. Now Oak Harbor heads to the sub-regional tournament at Stanwood High School Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6.
Oak Harbor coach Larry Falcon likes the improvement of his young team over the course of the season and its chances in the postseason.
“We’re coming along,” he said. “I think we will do some shocking at the sub-regional.”
The Getchell match began at 138 pounds, and the Chargers won the first four matches and six of the first eight to take leads of 21-0 and 33-6.
Oak Harbor rebounded to capture the final six bouts. The first five wins brought the ‘Cats to within a point, 33-32, and then Michael Lym (132 pounds) wrapped up the rally with a first-period pin (1:44).
That gave the Wildcats their only lead, but it came when it counted most — at the end.
Sam Zook (285) started the comeback with an 8-1 win, then the lightweights took over. Justin Go (106) and William Nickelson (113) each won by forfeit and Garrett Stahl (120) recorded a pin (2:44).
Blake McBride (132) followed with a technical fall (16-1), setting up Lym’s matching-winning pin.
After Marysville-Getchell (2-3, 4-5) took its 21-0 lead, Oak Harbor got on the board when Nick Dugin (170) won 5-1.
Colton Burdick (182) followed with a thrilling 13-11 win in overtime. That victory turned out to be a difference maker when the final team totals were tallied.
Other Oak Harbor results: Lucas Nickelson (138) lost by pin, :24; Zach Aketch (145), lost by pin, 4:47; Joseph Field (152) lost by pin, 1:02; Eriq Boler (160) lost 16-8; and Isaiah Edmon (220) lost by pin, 1:20.
