The Oak Harbor and Stanwood-Camano Babe Ruth baseball teams each won a close game during a double-header split Saturday, June 1, at Clover Valley Park.

Stanwood scored two runs in the seventh inning to win game one 4-2, then Oak Harbor used a big third inning and hung on to win the second contest 7-6.

With the first game tied at 2 entering the seventh, Stanwood used a two-out single, hit batter and double to pull out the win.

Stanwood scored single runs in the second and fourth with the help of Oak Harbor mistakes.

Oak Harbor collected its runs in the third and fourth.

With one out in the third, Jordan Davenport doubled, stole third and scored on Cory Roberts’ bunt.

Robert Herring opened the fourth with a single, stole second and third and scored on a ground out.

Herring pitched the first five and two-thirds innings in what coach Bill Young called Herring’s “best outing to date.”

Herring also led the offense, getting two of Oak Harbor’s five hits.

In game two, Oak Harbor was down 2-1 heading into the bottom of third, then scored five runs and another in the fourth to go up 7-2.

From there it was hang-on time as Stanwood clawed back in the game. After scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth, Stanwood scored two in the seventh and left the bases loaded to get within one.

Oak Harbor opened the game with a run in the first. Trent Benson hit a ball off the fence and eventually scored on Chris Levy’s bunt.

Stanwood recovered to go up 2-1 in the second, and then Oak Harbor erupted for its big third inning, scoring all five runs with two outs.

With one out, Herring singled and moved to third on a ground out. Paul Spence walked; Dominic Stevens singled; Dylan Bailey, Paul Southerland, Roberts and Austin Hauter walked; and Davenport singled to produce the five runs.

In the fourth, Herring doubled and scored on Spence’s single.

Benson and Herring finished with two hits each.

Young said, “Overall these were two well-played, intense and enjoyable games.”

Oak Harbor is off until a double-header at Sedro-Woolley at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8.
