Prior to the start of Friday’s WesCo North showdown football game, the Snohomish Panthers appeared to have everything going their way.
The were undefeated and on top of the league, it was alumni night at Veterans Memorial Stadium and the stands were packed with loyal fans, and the University of Washington marching band and cheerleaders were performing at halftime.
The only problem was their opponents were the Oak Harbor Wildcats and the Panthers failed to bring their A game.
The result was a 38-10 blowout victory for Oak Harbor.
Oak Harbor scored the first touchdown at the 3:20 mark of the opening quarter on a 15-yard Chris Valencia run, but Snohomish tied the score with 1:36 on the clock on a 56-yard dash by Derek Jones.
A 35-yard field goal by Dayton Wiseman at the 4:06 mark of the second quarter gave the Panthers their only lead, and that turned out to be the final points Snohomish would score.
Johnny Encinas hit Michael Bell with a 20-yard scoring strike with 1:59 remaining until halftime, and Kevin Flavin gave the Wildcats a 17-10 lead at the break nailing a 34-yard field goal with no time showing on the clock.
Oak Harbor scored on its first possession of the third quarter on a 5 yard Encinas to Bell pass, and put the game out of reach at the 10:39 mark of the fourth quarter on a 7 yard run by Donovan Hunt.
Leading 31-10, the Wildcats put the game in the book with 2:41 remaining when Encinas hit Rodrick Rumble with a touchdown pass from 15-yards out.
The victory ups Oak Harbor’s record to 3-0 in league games and 4-0 overall, and puts the Wildcats in first place in the WesCo North.
