A dreary third quarter by the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team resulted in a dismal 60-48 loss at Everett Tuesday, Jan. 24.

The game was close the first half — the Seagulls led 17-14 and 30-28 after the first two quarters — but the shots stopped dropping and the turnovers started adding up for Oak Harbor in the third period, according to coach Mike Washington Sr.

He said, “We missed lay-up after lay-up in the third quarter.”

That helped Everett outscore the Wildcats 12-4 and take a 42-32 lead into the final period.

Oak Harbor cut into the lead, then missed a point-blank shot that would have trimmed the gap to five with about five minutes left and never got closer as the ‘Gulls (3-9, 3-12) pulled off the upset.

The Wildcats committed 11 turnovers to Everett’s seven, and the Seagulls took advantage by outscoring Oak Harbor 16-3 off the mistakes.

Washington Sr. said, “They just wanted the game more than we did.”

Mike Washington Jr. scored 26 points for Oak Harbor; Matt Burgoyne seven; JoJo Webster five; Dayne Herron four and Kevawn Brooks, Elias Whitefoot and Paul Johannsen two each. Brooks added nine rebounds.

Washington Jr. is closing in on the school career scoring record and will most likely set a new mark this week. He has scored 1,405 points and needs 22 more to tie Brannon Stone’s record of 1,427 set in 1998.

Oak Harbor (5-6, 5-10) plays four games in five days beginning with a trip to Meadowdale (4-7, 6-10) Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7:15 p.m. The Wildcats then host the league’s top three teams: third-ranked Mountlake Terrace (11-0, 15-0) Friday at 7:15, Shorewood (8-2, 11-3) Saturday at 5 and Glacier Peak Monday (8-4, 11-5) at 7:15.
