Lake Stevens wrapped up its 20th league wrestling title in 21 years by defeating visiting Oak Harbor 55-15 Thursday.

The Vikings finished the regular season 10-0, 8-0 in the Wesco North. Lake Stevens, the defending state champion, is currently ranked No. 1 in the state 4A poll.

Oak Harbor finished the Wesco season winless and the year with a 2-10 record.

Oak Harbor coach Mike Crebbin called it a “tough season.”

The Wildcats lacked depth all year because of illness, injuries, academic problems and disciplinary issues.

Crebbin said, “We (the coaching staff) made some choices that may have sacrificed some wins.” He added that they dropped some wrestlers because of violations of team rules and philosophies. He said, “It is important they understand our principles.”

Crebbin said “it’s a long season” and wrestlers have to work hard, keep their grades up and make good choices. “These kids (the ones who finished the season) have done that.”

The Lake Stevens match was a good way “to know at what level we have to wrestle to be successful at district,” according to Crebbin.

Oak Harbor got wins from Corey Trimbur (103), Brandon Stratton (152) and Steven Souza (160). Trimbur won 8-7, while Stratton (2:59) and Souza (5:32) picked up pins.

Crebbin said Colton Elliot and Stratton each moved up a weight to face wrestlers they may see at district.

Elliott (145) lost to Andrew King 4-3. King is the state’s No. 5 ranked wrestler at 140 pounds; Elliot is No. 7.

Crebbin noted that Zach Loescher (171) wrestled well although he lost to the state’s No. 4 ranked wrestler, Jake Anderson, 11-3.

Lake Stevens is facing its own disciplinary issues. Three of its wrestlers, two of which are ranked No. 1 and the other No. 2 in the state, did not compete against Oak Harbor for unspecified team-rule violations.
