Now that the fall season has concluded, Coupeville and Oak Harbor high school athletes have received all-league, local team, and varsity letter awards.
OHHS Cross Country
Juniors Adrianna Royal, Allison Duvenez, and Tyler King all earned all-Wesco North first team honors in cross country.
Sophomore Matt Reith was named to the second team, and senior Jessica Denmon received honorable mention.
King and Royal were selected as the Wildcats’ MVP’s. Matt Bolte and Ariel McCarter were chosen for the Coaches’ Award by Eric Peterson and Andy Wesley.
The Most Improved honors went to Thomas Honeycutt and Taylor Von Grey. Reith and Baily Martinez received the “XC” Award.
Rookies of the Year went to John Kaltenbach and Christina Wicker.
Twelve boys received varsity letters: Christopher Horn, Adam Goforth, Bolte, Lucas Salmons, Colton Elliot, Wyatt Homola, King, Reith, Mitchell Jackson, Chris Opdyke, Honeycutt and Kaltenbach.
The girls also had 12 letter winners: McCarter, Jessica Denmon, Duvenez, Abigail Leete, Jessica Foster, Janelle Yoshimoto, Royal, Heather Dale, Von Grey, Emily Bain, Hannah Kagey, and Wicker.
Coupeville Football
Coach Ron Bagby was chosen by the Cascade Conference as the Coach of the Year. He helped the Wolves to a 4-6 record and fifth place finish after being predicted to finish eighth in the preseason coaches’ poll.
Senior defensive lineman David Donley was Coupeville’s lone all-Cascade Conference first-team player.
Senior Chad Brookhouse and junior Ian Smith both earned two-way second-team honors.
Brookhouse was named as a tightend and linebacker. Smith was tabbed as a wide receiver and defensive back.
Senior defensive lineman Davion Watkins was also picked for the second team.
This year’s varisty lettermen were Chase Griffin, Erik Wheat, Jason Bagby, Smith, Mitch Pelroy, Justin Adams, Jason Ornburn, Brookhouse, Jesse Tucker, Dalton Engle, Greg Wendell, Donley, Watkins, Tim Walstad, Brandon Nootenboom and Zach Piercy.
Oak Harbor Football
Senior Nick Rouser topped the Oak Harbor football honors by being named all-Wesco North on both offense and defense. The 6-5, 240 pound lineman was picked as an offensive tackle and defensive end.
Senior Josh Higbee joined Rouser on the first team offense as a wide receiver, and senior Derrick Clarit on the defense as a member of the secondary.
Senior quarterback Luke Felkner and sophomore wide receiver Mike Washington were tabbed for second team offense.
Senior outside linebacker Alec Castillo and junior inside backer Judd Ford were second team all-Wesco North on defense.
Senior running back Donovan Hunt, senior lineman Javon Payne, and senior kicker Ryan Fakkema received honorable mention.
The Wildcat players voted Felkner as the team’s Offensive Most Valuable Player and Castillo as the Defensive MVP.
Lineman of the Year went to Payne. He was joined by Clarence Lamont, Josh Higbee and Pat Higbee as the team captains.
Twenty-seven seniors earned letters from coach Jay Turner: Dustyn Bull, Fakkema, Felkner, Lamont, Rashaad Smith, Clarit, Andy Haag, Dillon Peterson, Josh Higbee, Hunt, Jason Curles, Adam Smith, Pat Higbee and Brad Farnum.
Other senior lettermen were Chris Zafra, Rouser, Payne, Jon Witalis, Castillo, Curtis Ducken, Jake Lundstrom, Austin Church, Terry Rawls, Josh Sayre, Travis Stanford, Chris Hughes and Michael Gorman.
Juniors who earned varsity letters were Samuel Wolfe, Ian Sinchak, Zach Ayer, Ford, Robert Beadles, Drew Culver and Aaron Boesch.
Sophomore varsity lettermen included Gabe Dye, Peter Franssen, Josiah Miller, Brent Ryan, Tucker Lundstrom and Washington.
Coupeville Volleyball
Coach Toni Crebbin was named Co-Coach of the Year of the Cascade Conference along with Archbishop Thomas Murphy’s Jeff Curtis.
Crebbin led the Wolves to a third-place finish in the conference after Coupeville was predicted to finish seventh in the preseason poll.
Freshman Jessica Riddle earned all-league first team honors. She was the only ninth-grader of the 15 players selected for first or second team all-Cascade Conference.
Seniors Michelle Riddle and Julie Swankie were named to the honorable mention list.
Junior Tauni Moody was tabbed by her teammates as the Most Improved Player. Most Inspirational Player went to Jessica Blanchette.
Jessica Riddle was voted the Best Defensive Player, and her sister Michelle was voted Best Offensive Player.
Crebbin chose Moody for the Wolf Award.
Four seniors were awarded varsity letters by Crebbin: Blanchette, Kaylie Kellison, Michelle Riddle and Swankie.
Junior letter winners included Laura Chen, Kyra Ilyankoff and Moody.
Katie Smith was the only sophomore varsity letterwoman, and Hannah Christensen joined Jessica Riddle as the freshman letter winners.
Oak Harbor Volleyball
Hitters senior Marisa Sutherland and junior Katelyn Bristow earned honorable mention bids for the all-Wesco North volleyball team.
Bristow was also chosen by coach Kerri Molitor for Oak Harbor’s Coach’s Award.
Senior Melany Cone and junior Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley were selected as the team’s Most Valuable Persons.
Terrazas-Cooley, senior Emily Meagher and senior Devin Tanner were named team captains. Tanner also received the Most Inspirational Award.
Junior Mandy Kepner earned the Most Improved Award.
The Wildcats were also recognized by the state for their academic achievements. The JV team received an “outstanding” rating by the WIAA for an accumulative grade point average of 3.55. The varsity and freshman teams earned “distinguished” honors (3.0-3.49 GPA).
Coupeville Tennis
Seniors Connor Tasoff, Jordan Lamb and Travis Curtin all earned their fourth varsity letter this fall for the Wolves.
Garrett Knoll, Eston Humphrey and Tyler Montana were other senior varsity lettermen.
Juniors who earned varsity letters included Sean Thurman, Ben Hayes, Nic Anthony and Sam Weaver.
Freshman Nathan Lamb also lettered.
Tasoff was chosen as the team’s Most Valuable Player and captain.
Nate Lamb was named Most Improved Player and his brother Jordan won the Coach’s Award from Ken Stange.
Freshman Ben Wehrman was Most Inspirational.
Tasoff won the district singles title, and the Lamb brothers took the doubles crown.
As a team, the Wolves won the league and district championships.
Oak Harbor Tennis
Senior Derek Thomas was one of four Wesco North singles players named to the all-league first team.
Thomas, the Wildcats’ No. 1 singles player, placed second in the Wesco North division championship tournament. He was also chosen as the team’s captain.
Coach Horace Mells said Max O’Dell was tabbed as the Top Recruiter and Josh Evans the Confident Warrior.
The Practice Etiquette Award went to Geoff Worley, and Ben Cardinal was named Top Rookie.
Senior lettermen were Thomas and Christopher Holbrook.
Other varsity letter winners included Cardinal, David DeGuzman, Chase Edwards, Evans, Kevin Gagen, Benjamin Harris, Nicholas Merrick, O’Dell, Charles W. Southard, Matthew Takaoka, Brandon Vagt, and Worley.
Coupeville Soccer
Senior midfielder Courtney Boyd, sophomore fullback Amanda Montana and freshman fullback Amanda d’Almeida earned second-team all-Cascade Conference honors in soccer.
D’Almeida was also chosen by her teammates as Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
Montana, d’Almeida, Anna Bailey and Brittany Johnson were named Defenders of the Year.
Bailey picked up the Most Improved Player Award.
Ashley Manker earned the Most Valuable Player Award.
Catlin Phillips was the Offensive Player of the Year, and she was joined by Kelsey Miranda and Casey Andrews as the Forwards of the Year.
Boyd won the Team Spirit Award and was named along with Haley Max, Cassidi Rosenkrance and Megan Smith as Midfielders of the Year.
Coach Mike Thornton said that all of the girls named above were this year’s varsity letter winners.
Oak Harbor Soccer
Four Oak Harbor senior soccer players made the all-Wesco honorable mention list: Erin Neilon, midfield; Katie Schneider, midfield; J.J. Netthai, defender; and Maggie Gorman, keeper.
Coach Jeff Laiblin said that his team has not had its awards banquet, so letter winners and special award recipients have not yet been announced.
OHHS Swim and Dive
The Wildcats’ 200 freestyle relay received first-team all-Wesco North honors. Junior Tori Nickerson, sophomore Karina Concepcion and freshmen Akasha Trisler and Laura Rosen made up the all-star unit.
