OHHS grads excel in college

Oak Harbor High School graduate Tom Chandler was voted Air Force Academy Athlete of the Week for Oct. 26 through Nov. 2.

Chandler was the Falcons’ top scorer in the 2008 President’s Trophy Rifle Match Saturday, Nov. 1.

Shooting in the air rifle and small bore competition, he finished the day with scores of 582 and 575, respectively.

In the all-services academies matchup, Navy was the overall winner with a team total of 5,754 points. Army placed second with 5,704 and Air Force came in third with a total of 5,688. The Coast Guard finished in fourth place with 5,421 points.

Chandler, a sophomore at the Air Force Academy, was a standout shooter at Oak Harbor High School. He was Washington state Junior Olympic champion in 2006 and finished third at the NJROTC National Championship the same year. He was a two-year team captain in high school and earned four letters in rifle shooting.

McNeill hits double-double

Senior forward Heidi McNeill recorded a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds Nov. 4 helping the Washington women’s basketball team to a 77-73 overtime victory in an exhibition game against Love & Basketball, a team composed of former collegiate players, at Bank of America Arena.

The Huskies trailed most of the game, but pulled things together and sent the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period McNeill came through scoring four of the Huskies nine points, including back-to-back baskets, to give U-Dub 74-70 lead.

Washington opened the season Monday, Nov. 10, with a 92-57 win over Corbin College and will host Gonzaga in the official home opener on Sunday, Nov. 16.

McNeill is a graduate of Oak Harbor High School.
