The push for the state tournament begins this weekend when the Oak Harbor High School wrestling teams get the postseason started at their sub-regional meets.
The Oak Harbor swim team’s regular season is complete and the Wildcats will hit the district waters Feb. 12 and 13.
Although one regular-season game remains, both Coupeville basketball teams locked up district berths last week. The girls team, in fact, clinched its second consecutive Olympic title and will receive the conference’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Oak Harbor’s basketball teams, as of press time Friday afternoon, were still in the hunt for district slots but were on the cusp of being eliminated.
Wrestling
Oak Harbor heads to Stanwood High School for the boys 3A sub-regional tournament and to Bellingham High for the girls meet, which will include all girls from District 1 regardless of classification.
The boys begin at 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
The top four finishers advance to the regional meet at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Saturday, Feb. 13.
The girls sub-regional starts at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
Regional for the girls is Saturday, Feb. 13, at Bellingham’s Squalicum High School.
The state wrestling tournament for both boys and girls is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20, at the Tacoma Dome.
Swimming
The District 1 3A preliminaries start at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the Snohomish Aquatic Center. The finals begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
The top four finishers in each event qualify for state, which is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20, at the Weyerhaeuser King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Basketball
By winning the Olympic League crown, the Coupeville girls go directly to the district semifinals and the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
They will play the survivor of play among the Olympic League No. 3 seed and the second and fourth seeds from the Nisqually League at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Sumner High School.
If Coupeville wins, it will qualify for the regional tournament and play for seeding in the district title game at noon Saturday, Feb. 20, at Tacoma’s Foss High School.
In Coupeville loses, it plays a loser-out game at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Sumner for the third and final regional berth.
The Coupeville boys are locked into third place in the Olympic League and will play the Nisqually League’s No. 4 team (either Bellevue Christian or Charles Wright Academy) at home at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in a loser-out game.
That winner plays at the Nisqually League’s second-place team (either Cascade Christian or Seattle Christian) in another loser-out contest at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
The winner then advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and a shot at the Olympic League champion (either Port Townsend or Chimacum) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Sumner High School.
The Oak Harbor boys need several moving parts to fall perfectly into place, including winning its final two games, to advance. Oak Harbor (1-7, 2-16) goes to Marysville-Pilchuck (5-2, 6-10) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, and hosts Everett (4-3, 7-10) at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8.
Arlington (3-4, 7-10) will need to lose its final two games, and Getchell (2-6, 8-10) will need to split, losing to Stanwood and beating Arlington.
If all that happens, Oak Harbor, Getchell and Arlington will tie for fourth place and face off in a tie-breaker to determine which team will play the fourth-place team from the Wesco South to earn the final Wesco seed into the district tournament.
The Wildcat girls (1-7, 5-13) need to win their final two games and receive a little help to catch fourth-place Everett (3-5, 6-13).
First, on Friday, Feb. 5, Oak Harbor needs to defeat Marysville-Pilchuck (1-7, 3-15) at home (7:15 p.m.) and Everett needs to lose to first-place Arlington.
Next, the Wildcats need to stop the Seagulls in the regular-season finale in Everett at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9.
An Oak Harbor win would lift the Wildcats into a tie with Everett, necessitating a tiebreaker to see which club will advance.
Oak Harbor is familiar with this scenario. It finished in a fourth-place tie last year with Marysville Getchell and lost the tiebreaker.
The 3A boys district tournament begins Friday, Feb. 12, and the girls start the following night. The dates for the crossover games between the North and South fourth-place teams have not been determined.
Three teams from the District 1 3A tournament qualify for the regional playoffs.
