The run to the Olympic League softball title is a two-team race.
Not because Coupeville and Klahowya are the heavy favorites, but because they are the only teams in the 1A division of the conference.
Chimacum and Port Townsend did not have enough girls turn out this spring and cancelled their seasons.
The Cowboys are coming off three straight championships; Port Townsend, on the other hand, is in the midst of a 51-game losing streak.
Two teams or 10 teams, it doesn’t matter. Any way you slice it, Coupeville would be considered one of the favorites. The Wolves posted a 19-5 record in 2017 and return a wealth of talent.
Pitcher/shortstop senior Katrina McGranahan was named the league’s Co-Most Valuable Player last spring after earning first team honors as a freshman and sophomore.
Senior infielder Lauren Rose is a three-time, first-team selection; senior center fielder Hope Lodell is a two-time first-team choice; and junior first baseman Veronica Crownover received first-team honors as a freshman.
Other returning letter winners are juniors Sarah Wright (catcher) and Nicole Laxton (outfield); and sophomores Mackenzie Davis (outfield), Emma Mathusek (outfield), Melina Welling (infield) and Scout Smith (infield, pitcher).
Key newcomers are Chelsea Prescott (infield, pitcher), Coral Caveness (infield) and Mollie Bailey (outfield, catcher).
Coach Kevin McGranahan said his team’s strengths are its speed and selflessness. Filling the outfield corner positions is his biggest concern.
“Our goals and expectations are to win the Olympic League 1A division and then win districts and advance to state and make some noise in the state tourney,” he said.
The Wolves go to Langley to face South Whidbey in the season opener at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17.
