While the Oak Harbor High School boys golf team features only a dozen players, the top-end talent is solid.
The Wildcats return four if its best players from last year, including sophomore Nick Krantz who qualified for the state tournament in 2017 and placed 62nd.
Also returning is two-year letterman junior Haven Brown, a state qualifier as a freshman; three-year letter winner senior Nick Whitley; and last year’s Rookie of the Year, junior Nathanael Thompson.
“My younger players have a few seasons of growth under their wings and I feel like they are ready to have a breakout season,” coach David Smith said. “My four key varsity players in Nick, Nick, Nate and Haven all have lots of experience and talent to lead this team to great things this season.”
The goals for the season are for the “core varsity players to step up and lead this team to a top-three finish,” Smith said. “I would also like to see two to four players make it to state this year. They all have the ability to shoot low enough to make it.”
In addition, the support from the Whidbey Golf Club is a positive and will play a role in the team’s success, Smith said.
Oak Harbor, which placed sixth in the Wesco North last year, hosts the Purple Cup at 1 p.m. Monday, March 12, at the Whidbey Golf Club.
