Ryan Fakkema gave the Oak Harbor High School soccer team a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first half of Tuesday’s WesCo North match against Arlington.

However, Arlington rallied in the second 40-minute period with goals by David Lopez off a Walter Flores assist, and the game winner by Jake Smith to pull out a 2-1 victory.

The match was the first of the season for both squads.

Oak Harbor golfers Phil Reedy and Judd Ford fired identical scores of one-under-par 71 to tie for medalist honors in Tuesday’s four-team match at the Whidbey Golf and Country Club.

Coupeville thumps Friday Harbor 13-1

Geoff Wacker scored four goals and Mitch Stevenson had three as the Coupeville High School soccer team pounded Friday Harbor 13-1 in a Tuesday non-league match at Mickey Clark Field.

“Our offense really got going and our passing was good,” coach Paul Mendes said. “I was pleased with the possession game we played and our defense held up well.”

Mendes said he took Wacker out of the game with about 30 minutes to go and he probably could have scored more goals.

Tony Sherman scored a pair of goals for the Wolf Pack and teammates Ben Hayes, Spencer Tack, and Jordan Lamb had one goal apiece.

“We know we are going to be challenged in league games and it’s going to be tougher, but this was certainly a good start for us,” Mendes said.

Two big innings sink Wildcats

Two four-run uprisings, in the first and the fourth innings, carried Edmonds-Woodway to a 13-3 win over the Oak Harbor High School baseball team in a Tuesday non-league game.

The contest was called after five innings of play on the 10-run rule.

The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Edmonds-Woodway came back with four runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead.

Jay Stout, Yale Rosen and Ryan Byrne smacked doubles for the Wildcats.

Edmonds-Woodway banged out 14 hits in the game to hand Oak Harbor its second loss of the season.

Coupeville falls to Wolverines.

Friday Harbor collected just six hits off Coupeville High School softball pitchers in Tuesday’s non-league game, but 17 walks were a big factor in the Wolverines’ 13-3 victory.

Friday Harbor scored five times in the top of the first inning and added another run in the top of the second for a 6-0 lead before the Wolf Pack’s bats got going.

Coupeville scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead in half, but those were the only runs the Wolves would score in the game.

Friday Harbor added four runs in the top of the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, and the game was called after five innings of play on the 10-run rule.

Oak Harbor baseball team notches first win

A walk-off double by junior Sam Wolfe in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Oak Harbor High School baseball team and new head coach Tyson Van Dam the first win of the 2009 season Wednesday afternoon with a come-from-behind 10-9 victory over visiting Sedro-Woolley.

The Wildcats battled back from an 8-6 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to improve their preseason record to 1-2.

Sophomore Yale Rosen had the hot bat for Oak Harbor going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a triple, and teammate Jay Stout had a 2-for-4 game at the plate.
