Wolves win overtime game on road

Tuesday’s Cascade Conference basketball game at Granite Falls High School between Coupeville and the Tigers was a nail biter right to the end.

The Wolf Pack held a 42-36 lead heading into the final quarter but a 16-point uprising by the Tigers, including a 3-point bomb by Max Whitt in the waning moments, sent the game into overtime.

Both teams scored nine points in the first overtime period, resulting in the second four-minute period being put on the clock.

Coupeville went to work in the second overtime hitting 11 points, to earn its seventh league victory of the season, 72-63.

The Wolves had five players score in double figures, led by senior Zepher Loesch with 18 points, including three from 3-point range.

Jason Bagby tossed in 13 points, Cody Peters hit for 12, and Geoff Wacker and J.D. Wilcox scored 10 points each.

Third quarter sinks Wildcats

Another low scoring quarter, this time the third, was all Arlington needed to hand Oak Harbor High School its 13th league loss of the season in WesCo North basketball action Tuesday night.

The host Wildcats held a one point, 13-12, lead after the first quarter and were still in the hunt at halftime, trailing 29-26.

Oak Harbor’s point production in the third period was nearly non-existent as the Wildcats put up only one basket. Meanwhile, Arlington tallied 16 points and rolled to a 61-43 victory.

The loss was the 11th straight defeat for the Wildcats (0-13 league, 1-16 overall).

Mike Washington Jr. scored 16 points for Oak Harbor and teammate Jay Stout had 12 points.

Cole Carpenter tallied a game-high 17 points for Arlington.

Eagles have Oak Harbor’s number

Arlington High School, the newest addition to the WesCo North, has stymied and defeated the Wildcat girls on the basketball court twice this season.

On Jan. 6 the Eagles bested Oak Harbor 52-49 on the Cats’ home floor and Wednesday evening, a 16-point fourth quarter gave home-standing Arlington a 48-39 victory.

The game was an important one with second place in the league at stake.

Oak Harbor (8-5 league, 11-5 overall) held a 22-20 halftime lead and the score was tied 38-38 when Arlington senior Kyra Prause hit a basket with 1:32 left in the game to put the Eagles in front to stay.

Two of Oak Harbor’s three top scorers, Jessica Danmon and Nicole Mowbray, struggled in the game, and Cheyenne Tubo earned high-scoring honors for the Wildcats hitting for 14 points. Jennifer Jansen tallied 10 points, with Mowbray and Denmon accounting for six and five points, respectively.

Oak Harbor has three games remaining on the schedule, at home against Stanwood and on the road at Monore and Marysville-Pilchuck.

The Wildcats need victories in all three games plus a little help for other WesCo teams to have any hopes of being be able to secure a second-place finish in the league.
