Wolves seek win at homecoming

It’s been a rough football season for the Coupeville Wolves, but they hope to get the pack started in the right direction in front of a supportive homecoming crowd Friday night, Oct. 24.

Coupeville’s Cascade League record fell to 0-5 last Friday as the host Lakewood Cougars pounced on the visitors 42-6.

Coupeville fans had to wait a long time for something to cheer about, but finally in the fourth period Chase Griffin grabbed an 11-yard touchdown pass thrown by Ian Smith to put the visitors on the board.

The game was close in the first quarter with Lakewood taking a 7-0 lead, but the home team broke it open in the second, scoring another four touchdowns and 28 points before intermission.

Cougar received Jordan Stauffer was a particular thorn in the Wolves’ side as he scored four TD’s on five receptions.

Coupeville High School students, faculty and alum will swarm to Mickey Clark Field Friday evening to create a positive homecoming atmosphere for their team.

Visiting will be the Cedarcrest Red Wolves who are coming off a 47-27 loss to Archbishop Murphy.

Cedarcrest’s league record dropped to 3-2.

Powerhouse visits Whidbey

The South Whidbey Falcons’ unblemished football record got a spot on it Friday night as they lost 28 to 19 at Granite Falls.

The Falcons entered the game with a 6-0 record, but fell behind 28-13 after three quarters and they ran out of time in their comeback attempt. Granite’s game plan was to hold Falcon running back Hunter Mead in check, and they succeeded. Mead, the Cascade League’s top rusher, was held to 21 yards on nine carries.

The Falcons will try to regain their winning form Friday against the formidable, unbeaten Archbishop Murphy team coached by former Oak Harbor Wildcat coach Dave Ward.

Ward’s squad is 7-0 on the season.

Kickoff at the Falcons’ Waterman Field is set for 7 p.m.

The Wildcats improved their league record to 8-1 while the Wolves fell to 2-8.

The hosts put up a stout fight in losing 25-23, 25-11, 23-25, 25-18, never backing down against the tough competition. Coupeville senior Linde Maertens led the way with 11 kills while teammate Julie Huddleston contributed 20 assists and went 15-for-15 in serves, but it wasn’t quite enough to give the Wildcats a taste of losing.

Wildcat soccer loses to Everett

The visiting Everett Seagulls took advantage of a young Oak Harbor team to win 7-1 in a Wesco North matchup Thursday.

The Wildcats never had much of a chance against the league-leading Seagulls, who improved to 10-1 in league play. Oak Harbor fell to 1-11.

Oak Harbor supporters found reason to cheer when Carson McKole scored on a penalty kick.
